Kingsport, Johnson City and Bristol form Tennessee’s Tri-Cities area -- sandwiched between Virginia and North Carolina -- within the Appalachians, north of the Cherokee National Forest. Bristol lies across the state line from its twin, Bristol, Virginia, where country music evolved from Appalachian tunes. The Tri-Cities region, with East Tennessee State University in Johnson City, provides easy access to scenic beauty and outdoor recreation. Great hiking paths await amid the Smoky and Appalachian mountains, especially along the Tri-Cities area’s more than 100 miles of the 2,000-mile-plus Appalachian National Scenic Trail. In Johnson City, attractions include the Museum of Ancient Brick, America’s only such museum at General Shale Brick company headquarters. In Bristol, the Joe Morrell Grand Guitar stands three stories tall and is patterned after a Martin as the world’s only guitar-shaped music museum. Kingsport boasts assorted national landmarks and attractions, including bed and breakfasts on the National Register of Historic Places.
